PERLA B. CROSBY
FOUNDER AND EDITOR OF MY SANFORD MAGAZINE
WOULD YOU CARE, TO SATISFY THE CURIOSITY OF MANY READERS OF THE MAGAZINE, TO SHARE A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF YOUR BACKGROUND?
I was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the capitol of my country. My father was an entrepreneur and a prosperous businessman in the Broadcasting Industry. My mother owned a very popular and successful beauty parlor. I am one of five children. My oldest brother is a medical doctor in Santo Domingo. My younger brother is an engineer and a U.S. Citizen who resides with his family in Miami. My brother Marcos is deceased and my sister is a clinical psychologist who is now retired and lives in Santo Domingo as well. I have a Master's Degree in Business and my undergraduate degree is in Marketing. I first served as Manager of Marketing (commercial credit card customers) for a major local bank. The next step of my career included being appointed Director of Tourism for the Dominican Embassy in Rome, Italy where I eventually rose through the ranks to become Minister Deputy Chief of Mission (#2) over a period of 13 years. I returned to Santo Domingo and served in the Dominican Parliament. It was during that time that I met and married my husband, Benny Crosby. Benny retired as the Special Agent in charge of the U.S. Secret Services in Houston, Texas. After a short period of residing in our home in in Alabama, we relocated to Panama City Beach and later moved to Sanford where we currently live in the historic district. I have two sons by a previous marriage and three amazing grandchildren.
I UNDERSTAND THAT ITALY BESTOWED A VERY HIGH HONOR UPON YOU FOR YOUR YEARS OF UNDERSTANDING DIPLOMATIC SERVICES?
Yes, I received last year from the President of Italy, "The Order of the Star of Solidarity of Italian - knighted" with the right to wear the Medals. This is roughly equivalent to the Presidential Medal of Freedom in the United States.
YOU FOUNDED THE FIRST KNOWN MAGAZINE IN THE CITY OF SANFORD.
Yes I did! After I became a U.S. Citizen, I labored over finding my niche. I wanted to make a contribution to my community and the idea to start a positive community magazine was a passion that evolved inside of me. I discussed various potential formats with my husband and others and decided to include a Spanish translation of some articles in an effort to not only appeal to our English readers but to expand the contents to our Hispanic population who may struggle with understanding English. I am proud of the reception that "My Sanford Magazine" has received in this community and it has been my desire reach out to the public with our positive message through various social media outlets as well.
WHAT IS MY SANFORD MAGAZINE FOR YOU?
I have previous experience as the editor/publisher of a magazine in Italy. My Sanford Magazine is a creative outlet that provides a challenge for me and hopefully provides our readers with a sense of connection to their community.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SANFORD?
Well, I have to give credit to my husband. We made the decision to relocate to Central Florida and it was his research that discovered Sanford which we now know to have been well founded. We wanted access to an international airport that would afford easier travel to my native country. Both Benny and I have children and grandchildren who reside in different states and countries. It was our desire to be close to a larger city but live in a more relaxed, community where we could get to know our neighbors and make new friends...and we found it!
WHAT DO YOU DO FOR LIVING?
I am very creative so I tend to find outlets to keep me occupied. I am currently employed as an Italian translator for a global company headquartered in Lake Mary, Florida. I work well over forty hours a week and in my spare time I can be found working on the next issue of the magazine.
WHO WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR FAVORITE PAST SANFORD RESIDENT?
Henry Sanford, the founder of Sanford. We shared a common background as diplomats. He loved this city and was a true visionary. No doubt he would be proud to see what Sanford has become.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT LIVING IN SANFORD?
Sanford provides it's residents with a sense of community, great friends and professional acquaintances. Secondarily, we enjoy the small town atmosphere, availability of various transportation options, and the variety of excellent restaurants and shopping in the area. Sanford has a wonderful history and the promise of a future guided by visionaries who reside in our community.
